A brush can be anything you want. I scanned a bunch of household items, mesh, sponges, etc and turned them into brushes. I also have created brushs from photographs of the end grain of logs. You could scan, if you have a scanner, leaves that will be falling very soon. You can also use shapes or text. Color does not matter as the brush takes it color from that set for foreground and background.
After you get an image for a brush, then it is simply Edit %26gt; Define Brush. It will appear at the bottom of the currently loaded set of brushes.
