You could probably come up with something like this using the Rectangular Marquee tool and the Paint Bucket tool, using different colors and/or the Gradient tool in conjunction with Layers. (Whew...! what a lonnng sentence!).





Anyway, assuming an image size 8 x 10, open the image.





Select the Rectangular Marquee tool and in the 'Style' dropdown at the top, select 'Fixed'. Set the width to .1 inch and the height to 2.5 inches.





Go to Layer %26gt; New and add a layer.





Click on the new layer to set the small marquee on the layer. Drag the selection to the left edge and top of the image and use the arrow keys to fine tune.





Select a color in the Foreground color picker.





Using the Paint Bucket tool click in the selection to fill color.





Duplicate the layer, change the Foreground Color, move the marquee down the left edge adjacent to the first one and use the Paint Bucket to change the color of the second marquee.





Repeat as many times as needed for both vertical borders of the image.





Go to Image %26gt; Rotate Canvas and select 90CW.





Repeat the process above for both remaining borders.





When all borders are 'edged', go to Layer %26gt; Flatten Image.





You now have a uniquely bordered image.





Alternately, you could make one marquee, sized .1 inch x 10 inches, add that to a layer, then use the Gradient tool have have a blended edge of different colors. Do this for each vertical border, rotate 90CW, and repeat.

I would highly recommend buying a book, videos are all well and good but when it comes to trying to copy something you've learned it is so much easier to have a step by step guide next to you. I watch videos on youtube etc. but i have learned much more from books. Look for one that is specific for your use i.e. if it's Photo manipulation you use it for make sure you get a book aimed at Photographers rather than a generic Photoshop one that will deal with graphic design which may not be of use to you.

Any image will work but brushes must be black and white so this would be for a color photo.


Open the image, duplicate(so your not messing with the original) then Image%26gt;%26gt;adjustment%26gt;%26gt;desaturate which renders it grayscale. Then Image%26gt;%26gt;adjustment%26gt;%26gt;brightness/contrast. Adjust to remove as much gray as possible from the image so all that is left is black and white.Try to make it as clean and recognizable as possible. Grab your polygonal lasso and create a marquee around some part of the image. Go to edit%26gt;%26gt;define brush, it will come up in a window showing the properties of the brush and VOILA!, you've created a brush. You could try using the spray gun tool. But first choose colour that matches your background. Also save under a different name so you will still have the original. You can choose size of spray gun by going into brushes from your menu. And spray over dark unwanted shadows. try using the dodge tool... If that's not sufficient, You'll have to smudge and blur... That takes awhile, but it'll work.
Your best bets are the heal, clone stamp, and dodge tools. Adjust the opacity and flow if you are not getting the results you want.
Have you tried using Extract -- a wonderful tool found in CS2? Click on Filter and you will see it in the list.

You'll need to capture it to a file first. On a Mac, that's the screen cap function, Shift-Ctrl-Apple-4, on Windows it's prtscr or shift-prtscr. From there paste it into preview or the Windows equivalent, save it, then you can open it in Photoshop.

Magazines/Websites usually need people who touch up pictures. Some have employees just for that. But be aware that the job could also involve stuff like ';Adding blood to an accident picture'; (if working for specific magazines) which isn't a really nice job. Others want you to edit commercial pics all day or preparing pictures for web/print (involving cut-out of background (adding a new one, stuff like that), resolution/size adjustments, etc.)


Not really fulfilling but basically just PS. Depending on the required level you need basic up to professional skills (editing photographs can be hard at times).


Also, developing Web Layouts is an option.


That would basically be Graphic Artist, I guess.





If you're really good at drawing (with AND without PS) and can imagine things you read/develop ideas, you could also try to go for illustrating.

Then you can run the set up in your new laptop and install the programs.

There are lots of techniques to do that, to change eye colors you can use the red eye tool, or select the eye change the hue and saturations, every people has there own way. For Photoshope CS3 do this grab the wand tool make sure it's on + get all of the eye you want, then click the circle that is half way shaded, on the bottom of the layers panel. Then choose solid color, choose the color you want then there is a drop down list that says Normal change that to either: soft light, overlay, or color. Notice you are probably going to have to change the color one more time. After you do this go to the filter, blur, gaussin blur, put it at about 0.3 pixels to make it look like it's your normal eye color, doing this will smooth it out and make it look natural. Then save the file and your done!

the selection tool by colour is great, u can change the range of colours that it selects also.

brightness/contrast compresses the existing image data, whereas the Levels tool expands the image data.

Think of it this way.





Brightness / contrast treat every pixel the same. Every pixel gets brighter or darker, etc.





Level divides the pixel into about 3 broad category: shadow (dark pixel), midtone (middle ';gray';), highlight (bright pixels). But even then it isn't abrupt 3 groups but gradual division.





Curves treats the pixels as 256 different categories.





So you can see that levels are better and curves are even better. To get started use level to understand what you are doing. Then try the same with curves. There are time (many times) that levels are good enough. But then there are time when nothing but curves will do.





Since levels is easier to describe, here it goes: load the picture in Photoshop.





Go to Image%26gt;adjustments%26gt;levels.





Drag the right most triangle to the end of the histogram (drag left).


Drag the right most triangle to the end of the histogram (drag right).


Drag the middle triangle to the left or right until the image look good





This is all assuming that your monitor is somewhat calibrated.

Use LEVEL man, it's better than using Brightness%26amp;COntrast... because by using Level, you can decide either increasing the shadow, mid shadow, or highlight level... its easy and better result... or other option try using Curve (Ctrl+M on PC or Cmnd+M on Mac)... and start tweaking the individual RGB / CMYK channel (on top of the panel) or just use this shortcut:


ctrl+` = RGB channel (all channerl)


ctrl+1 = R / C


ctrl+2 = G / M


ctrl+3 = B / Y ... and so on and so forth...
Curves is really the best tool for correcting the exposure of an image... Levels is an easier method, you don't have as much control but if you don't understand how curves works yet you may just want to start off using levels.





When using levels, you'll notice that there are three little triangles at the bottom of the histogram, a black triangle, a grey one, and a white one. The black one controls the shadows, the grey the midtones, the white the highlights. The midtones are what you'll probably be adjusting the most. For an underexposed image, you'll want to click on the grey triangle and move it to the right some (towards the white triangle). That will lighten the image, adjust it to where it looks correct. If you notice that the picture doesn't have enough contrast then, play around with the black and white triangles to bring out the shadows and highlights.





I don't think I can explain how to use Curves without being completely confusing and unhelpful, so I'd suggest searching for tutorials on how to use it if you're interested in having more control over the image. Or just open it up and try playing with it, personally I've always found that just experimenting with different photoshop features was one of the best ways to learn it.
I try really hard not to have them but they do happen. First, never work on your original. Always make a duplicate copy.


Then in click on Layers/New Adjustment Layer/Curves.





I generally start with 'curves' and bring the dark up to pretty light; sometimes adjusting the light end to the left as well. Then I will go into Image/Adjustments/Brightness-Contrast and adjust there.





It's just easier to make sure your lighting is accurate. I know that doesn't always happen. The problem with adjusting underexposed images is that they often look grainy. Also you may have to go into Image/Adjustments/Selective Color and adjust the yellow.





Once last thing, if you shoot in raw you can make cleaner adjustments. Give it a try.

Removing intense shadows on a photo in Photoshop?

I have this picture of a gorillas face, but one half of his face is darker than the other half due to the way the photo was taken and the position of the sun. I want to use this effect but whenever i do either one half of his face is too light or the other half is too dark. I am a bit confused on what exactly you are asking...are you trying to duplicate the effect, or remove the shadowing all together?so i an just going to go by what the title of this Q is saying...sorry if i am answering the wrong thing! =]


I would do the following to get rid of the shaddows:


1. select the shaddowed part of his face ( I would do this using the magnetic lasso tool, but you can do it however you like)





2. go to select (at the top of your screen) %26gt;%26gt;modify%26gt;%26gt;feather and then feather by 3 pixles (this will make sure that there are no rough edges)





3. Then, making sure that your selection is still active, go to levels (i dont remember how to get there using the menus but the keyboard command is command L (so hold down the command key and the letter L and the same time) on a mac or control L on a PC.





4. adjust the white slider as far the the left as you want until you are satisfied.

Under Image-%26gt;Adjustments you'll find the ';Shadows Highlight'; command. This would be the easiest way to adjust very dark shadows.





Another way would be to go to 'Colour Range' under SELECT and under 'sampled colours' click select on 'shadows' in the drop down menu.





The shadows will be selected. Just copy and paste these. Then in your layers palette change the blending mode (of the copied layer) from NORMAL to SCREEN. Then move your opacity slider to get the best results.
The easiest way is under Image%26gt;Adjustments%26gt;Shadow/Highlights. That will open a small window with two slider bars, one for Shadows, and one for Highlights. It will darken your Highlights and lighten your Shadows, as much or as little as you want. Really easy and quick fix for that, you can preview the effect live as you change the sliders. Hope this helps!
I'm quit new at Photoshop so there might be another way to do this as well. But what would try to do is make a selection of the dark part of his face, then put the selection on its own layer with ctr+shift+J then on the new layer adjust the lighting and play with the effects.
Make a duplicate layer and adjust the shadows in the dark half. Erase the parts that are now too light.





Or...





Try the ';Shadows and Highlights'; tool. Just move the slider until it works out.





Or...





Use the curves adjustment and move the shadow adjustment to a lighter level.

Select the eye with any selection tool.


Make a new layer.


Fill the selection (on the new layer) for your desired eye color.


Set the blend mode of the layer to color.


TIP: for the color to blend in more try feather the selection below to select.

Go to Filter - Blur Surface Blur.


EXTENSION: Also try gaussian blur on a duplicated layer and set the blend mode of overlay, multiply, or darken.

From what I was taught as long as there is a 30% difference you are fine, and as long as it is not recognizable as that image you are good as well. Just because it is a purple dinosaur doesnt make it barney or a big yellow bird doesnt make it big bird.





If it does look like the image you got it from you cannot use it to make money otherwise you can be sued.
If you are copying the outline and simply changing color of the clothes, I would say it is still copyright infringement. Especially if you are using these for commercial gain.


Now, if you take a drawing/illustration, and change it in some way (like pixelating it ala Litchenstein or colorizing it similar to Warhol) then it is your own art. Of course, a company logo or famous cartoon character is going to be copyrighted anyways.
Common sense comes into play here. Let's say it's an outline of a bird, then you're safe. If you put a bluebird on your t-shirt, no one is going to see it as the same bluebird he or she painted or photographed. But if the picture is easily recognized as someones work, then you'd best not do it. Or change it more where its your own art. As long as you are inspired by someones image, and don't blatantly copy it, you're pretty safe. But to be on the up and up, write to the owner of the art and ask their permission to reproduce it.

Color does not matter as the brush takes it color from that set for foreground and background.





After you get an image for a brush, then it is simply Edit %26gt; Define Brush. It will appear at the bottom of the currently loaded set of brushes.

If I recall correctly, CS1 doesn't work like that. You need to select one text layer then click on the little link icons next to the other layers to ';group'; them together. Then, when you move or scale one of the layers, the other linked ones will do the same thing.

But, the path will have so many points in it that it is almost unusable, it certainly will be jagged and, in places, inaccurate.





Reprographic houses will hate it because it will slow down their rip, clients will hate the finished product because their lovely products have jagged edges, you will hate it when you have to go back and redraw the path.





It is bad practice and marks you down as unprofessional. there are alternatives 鈥?using layer masks, for example.

I don't have a shaky hand at all, but when I ink my pencil lines with a pen, and then scan my picture in, my lines seem to come out wobbly and not quiet as clean as they look on paper. It's frustrating!





So, I just ink my works on Photoshop using a tablet. I'm not really sure how to give you tips on how to make your hand steadier, other than practicing continuously and training your hand to get used to working in particular strokes and movements to the point where it doesn't shake anymore.

There is no way at this time to re-size the icons. The graphics files in photoshop that display the icon images were only made a set size (raster) and not made scalable (vector).

There are a few odds and ends you can make larger in Photoshop (though not the toolbox as far as I know).





Layer icons/Channel icons/Path icons - go to the flyout menu at the upper right corner of the palette, select palette options and up pops the thumbnail size option. These 3 need to be set individually.





Color palette - also a flyout menu at the uppper right - select large thumbnail or large list.





Brushes - there's a choice for thumbnail size in the brushes flyout menu, but just for the regular brush view, not for the Stroke Thumbnails. If you change it, it will change it in stuff like the clone tool, or eraser tool or anything else that uses the same choice of brushes.





Tool presets - also have small and large views in their flyout menus.





Font names - go the Edit pulldown menu at the top of Photoshop --%26gt; Preferences --%26gt; Type and set the font preview size.





If I run across any others I forgot, I'll come back here and plug them in.





Meanwhile, maybe someone else can come up with more?

I Understand that when the scratch disk is full or what not, you need to re-assign it to another drive in order to free up some space. However, I have only seen tutorials on how to do it if you are in Photoshop. My computer won't even let me open Photoshop anymore so I have no idea how to reassign!! You really need to free up some space on your main drive. Otherwise photoshop will never open. Do you have another drive? If so, move some files to that drive and try again. If not, then nothing you do, short of deleting files, will let photoshop run.





A good place to find useless files (if you use windows) is in


C:\Documents and Settings\Profile Name\Local Settings\Temp\





I occasionally delete everything from that folder to free up some space. (Well I did until I got a mac). Then remember to empty the recycle bin.

First of all, a brush is a brush in GIMP. Play around with each one to see what you can do. Play around with the pressure sensitivity, the fade out, etc. to see what effects you can create.





To answer your second question, yes you can remove portions of a picture. Different methods for different types of images, but the easiest answer I can give is to use the wand tool to copy the selected image and paste it in the new image.

I have created a background in Photoshop. I want to add some images in varying in sizes to specific selected areas of the background. When I add the image, it is way to big. When I resize it and drag it to fit the space, it gets very blurry. That isn't making much sense - you're saying that you scale an image down and it gets blurry? That's pretty much not possible. Are you selecting the layer that's big (and above your background) and using Free Transform (ctrl + T), holding the shift key down, and dragging a handle to scale the image smaller?





The only thing I can think of is that you've done the above but didn't hit enter or click on the checkmark after transforming so you are looking at the preview? Or not holding the shift key so you are messing up the proportions?





I've tried re-creating your problem thinking it might have to do with resolution and your zoom view or something, but no matter what I do, anything I scale down stays sharp.





EDIT: you are making the picture smaller? are you zoomed in to 100% (double click on the magnifying glass in the tools to get right to 100%) and it still looks fuzzy? On your layer menu (most probably bottom right) you should see an icon which says fx in italics. Before clicking it, select the layer to which you want to add the effects (it can be text or pics or anything) and then click the 'fx' it should bring a window with a LOT of options - you'll get it once you see it.

Good question, it seems like it should be easy but when I tried it there's no obvious answer.





I did figure out a way to do it however - probably not the quickest or best but it works...





Click Select %26gt; Colour range





Click on the region to pick up all the pixels that are in the colour you want to change. When you click OK you will see the pixels you want to change are now selected.





Click on your foreground colour square in the toolbar and type in your hex value. Click OK, grab a massive brush and paint in the new colour over the top of the old colour.

Ah yes, that sounds a bit more tricky. Obviously the lighter and darker green will have differing hex values to each other... so you could either painstakingly reconstruct the original in your new colours using masks and gradients etc... bit of a long job.





Perhaps there is another way. Can you tell me more information about what you want to do and why? What kind of image you start with and what you need to end up with. Feel free to send me the files (kaibosh_23@yahoo.co.uk) and I will have a play.





Does your image NEED to include colour of that exact hex value? If there is a gradient, it will be different hex number all the way along.

There is no setting that defines aliasing for shapes. What you might consider is changing from vector drawing to pixels (or vice-versa).





Once you select the Elipse tool on the options bar next to it you will have 3 icons, the 1st one is a square with little square corners (vector drawing) and the 3rd one is a plain square (pixels), try selecting one of those and see if this solves your problem.





If i doesn't, create a circle using the fill pixels in a separate layer and try applying a filter.

For the purposes most people seem to use Photoshop, the latest versions are a waste of money. Professionals like the latest and greatest versions, partly because we can afford them, and, more importantly, because the upgrades attempt to make productivity improvements, such as speeding up and combining functions.





Except for the superlative typograpy tools in later versions, there is very little the latest versions of Photoshop do that can't be done with earlier versions. Photoshop 3, for example, was the first version to introduce ';layers,'; and made the greatest advance in image editing technology. Even that only made certain projects, such as collages, easier to assemble.





So, to your question, you can find earlier versions of Photoshop, online and legal, for much cheaper than the latest one. If you get one only a few upgrades old, you will still have one POWERFUL design tool, as good as the professionals used a year or two ago. Or, you can locate an application called Photoshop Elements for about $100. I compare it's functionality to Photoshop 3 or 4, which was state of the art about 10 years ago. Still a powerful tool.Is there a program as good as Photoshop CS3 but cheaper?
I really like Corel's Paint Shop Pro. It's about a hundred bucks and it's just as good in my opinion.

I am brand new to photoshop! I was cropping photo's and changing hue's. I somehow did something so that when I try cropping it says the layer is locked. I know NOTHING about layers and didn't really know I was using one. When I open a new file into Photoshop it won't let me crop my photo because it says the layer has been locked. What do I do so that I can unlock and crop my photos?How do I unlock a layer in photoshop?
If it's the background layer, just double click on the Layer in the Layers palette (make sure you ALWAYS have the Layers palette open, if it isn't go to Window%26gt;Layers.) When you double click it will bring up a little window that will allow you to name the Layer, and it will already say Layer 0. You can accept this or rename it (use Layers to organize what you do in the image; name them in some way that is useful to you.)





Note, you always want to use Layers. They are your friend! Think of them as sheets of transparent or translucent paper stacked on top of each other. The top layer is the top sheet in the stack. In the Layers palette, you can do things to different layers (add effects, for example), you can rearrange the layers by dragging them in the palette, you can add masks to a layer, you can turn layers on and off by clicking the little eye icon (to help you see what's underneath.) You can lock individual layers by clicking the Layer thumbnail to make sure it is selected and clicking the lock icon on the top of the Layers palette. Click that icon again to unlock it. (Locking is useful when you have many layers and there are some you don't want to mess with while you are doing stuff to other layers). You can also delete layers (say you end up with an extra layer you don't need, or it's a layer you did something to that you don't like) by just dragging that layer in the palette to the trash can icon at the bottom of the palette.





As a very good general rule, when you open an image, do three things: (1) do a Save As and rename the file to something that lets you know it's the working copy (2) when you Save As, in the dialog box drop down menu select Photoshop (.psd file type) so that you are working the native Photoshop file type which will allow you access to everything in Photoshop (some of the things Photoshop can do won't work with some file types) and (3) once you've got your Saved As copy, in the Layers palette, click on the Layer icon (usually will say Background layer), and drag it to the icon at the bottom of the palette that looks sort of like a square page with a folder over corner. That's the New Layer icon, and by dragging the layer to that, you are creating a new layer that's a copy of the original layer. So you can do stuff to that new layer that doesn't affect the original, which is underneath.





Why should you do these things? (1) you will always have your original image (2) once you mess with the image the way you are working, you are making permanent changes to the pixels; once you save the image you can't go back. It's always a really good idea to work on a copy so that if you mess up or aren't happy with what you've done, you can always go back to the original.





Note that it's also a very good idea to save every-so-often. It's easy: on a PC, hit Ctrl+S, on a Mac hit Command (Apple key) + S.

None, if the images are flattened into non-editable images like .jpg or .gif. If the Photoshop files are the original files and they have not been flattened, meaning all of the layers are intact, you can use any version of Photoshop that's at least the same version number or above. But if the version you have is more then about 2 versions above the version that the files were created in, you may run into trouble...





As a side note, there are methods to use to edit the text but they are fairly involved and involve manipulating the text as if they were images...

Ceramics, how do you get image you designed in photoshop onto the plate?

I have designed a number of plates in Photoshop - it is a circular design with stuff inside the circle, like a plate. It's designed to be a plate. Now I want to get what I designed in photoshop onto the plate and then fire the plates. I know I can try to paint it, or I can print it and then paint the picture and then try to transfer it but I don't paint that great, is there another way to do it - like print onto some substance where it should transfer or like a transparency or ink transfer? has anyone done this? If I can do this, I can make some cool plates, and that would be a good thing.

My most recent way is with a laser color copier using Baltea D.C. ceramic pigment toners that give near perfect full color from photos or graphics.

When you open multiple images in Photoshop it creates a workspace for each image.complete with it's own layers.





Open your two images, one of you and one of the forest. In your image, select the parts of the image you want to copy and paste it into the image of the forest.

That's actually what you want it to do. That way you can edit your picture however you want - e.g. clip out a backgroud or whatever.





Once you're finished editing, you can (assuming you're on windows) hold down CTRL-ALT-shift and hit 'e'. That will combine all your layers in to one layer while leaving all your original layers intact.





If you're dead set on having everything in one layer before you save it, CTRL-Shift 'e' will flatten all the layers for you, but I highly recommend against that.

actually, i am not familiar on photo editing from flash to photoshop thats why i download the video first then i play it at the same time taking screenshots. or you can also use the printscreen while the video is playing to take some pictures.
A still photo you put the curser on it and righ click when the box drops down save picture as... name it and save it to your computer desktop then you can pick it up on photoshop (Make sure it's in Jpeg or bmp) Also beware that the picture is not copyright..

Is it a licenced and legal copy of photoshop?
Sounds like your monitor cable has a kink... or the color management is all whacked out...





Reboot the computer and press ';del'; or ';F1'; to enter the bios (it will tell you what button to press). If the screen is purple there, it isn't photoshop, its the hardware. Make sure the cable is plugged in completely and that no pins are bent... move the cable around and see if it improves the color.

Hmm... There is no easy way to do this - it's very hard, but heres a few tips:





First of all, try and get a film poster/celebrity picture etc, where the actor/celebrity is looking in the same direction as the picture of the person you want to use - this will make it seem much more realistic when you use it





Then, carefully erase around the person's head you want to use. I would only take the front of face, and not ears, hair etc. So you have just the middle of the face - eyes mouth nose. Then copy this, and paste into film poster/image of celebrity





Adjust the size of the cropped face to be the same size as the celebrities face as best you can. Then, place it ontop of the celebrities face!





Try to smooth the transition between the faces, and click on the cropped face, and make the colour levels, 'auto-colour'. This should blend the faces.





If required, use the paintbrush and colour selector tool to select the colour of skin, and to carefully brush this around the edges.

you should be able to just select the white part and delete it. then you will have to save the image as a file type that supports transparency I'm pretty sure a GIF should work.

The UK one just uses the UK English instead of US English. Besides the actual name, there is no difference between the two versions. Both are fully loaded with same features :)

Don't go by the eBay prices; I would never buy software off of eBay (unless I already knew the seller or had good contacts who verified the seller for me). The direct prices from Adobe is approximately $600 to $1000 depending on whether it's the standard or extended version. Student licenses are cheaper. So to get the correct price, you need to convert that $600 to $1000 to pounds, obviously鈥擨'm sure you know that! =) It's possible the UK price has some added costs, including that Adobe might be hedging their bets on the Pound vs. Dollar values.

Create your design. You can size your design within Photoshop by creating a new file and determining the height , width and resolution of your image. Then, select the text tool, located on the right of the screen, and stretch it across your image to write text on the decal.
Ultimately you need to set the size of the document to 88' x 21' and if you are getting it printed you need to make sure you have a resolution between about 150dpi and 300dpi. Resolution is the critical thing however, too low and it will come out pixelated when you print it large.
